Mohgwyn’s Palace – The Ultimate Rune Spot

One of the most efficient places to farm Runes in Elden Ring is found at Mohgwyn’s Palace, an area you’ll encounter through the White Mask Varre questline. While this region is tied to the larger narrative involving Mohg, Lord of Blood, most players come here for a different reason: it offers an incredible Rune payout in minutes, repeatable indefinitely.

By defeating mostly passive enemies near the Palace Approach Ledge-Road Site of Grace, you can earn upwards of 40,000 Runes in just a few minutes. Equipping the Golden Scarab talisman will increase this yield further. Once unlocked, this spot becomes the game’s go-to farming route for players looking to power through levels quickly.

To reach it, finish Varre’s quest until you receive the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. This item will teleport you to Mohgwyn’s Palace. From the starting point, ride Torrent directly through a hazardous zone to avoid danger and reach the Site of Grace safely. Don’t stop until you get there.

Near the grace point, you’ll find a field of Albinaurics—humanoid enemies that lie in a resting position until provoked. They drop about 2,000 Runes each, and only react when attacked individually. Use backstabs or ranged attacks for safe farming. A few guards patrol nearby, but their movements are predictable, and they can be picked off one by one. This route can net 40K Runes every few minutes with almost no risk, and it resets each time you rest at the Site of Grace.

Great Early and Mid-Game Rune Spots

Not everyone can reach Mohgwyn’s Palace early on, so here are several other reliable farming areas depending on your progress through the game:

Elden Ring Storm Trolls

Stormgate Trolls (Early Game)

North of the Stormgate in Limgrave, you’ll find massive trolls that award around 1,000 Runes each. They hit hard, but their sluggish movement makes them manageable with spacing and ranged attacks. Taking them down one at a time is an effective way to build a Rune stockpile for your first major upgrades or boss attempts.

Castle Redmane Battlefield (Early to Mid-Game)

In Southern Caelid, just outside Castle Redmane, enemy factions constantly clash in front of the fortress. From the Impassable Greatbridge Site of Grace, ride up the hill and let them fight each other while you gather Runes from the carnage. Picking off survivors can net between 3,000 to 7,000 Runes per run with minimal danger.

Windmill Village (Mid to Late Game)

On the Altus Plateau, visit Dominula, Windmill Village. Here, you’ll find strange, dancing villagers that only attack when approached. Defeating them yields a solid Rune return, and you can quickly respawn them by resting. Expect 7,000 or more per clear, making it an ideal mid-game farming spot before facing the Godskin Apostle boss.

Elden Ring Haligtree Prayer Room

Haligtree Prayer Room (Late Game)

In the optional Haligtree region, fast travel to the Prayer Room Site of Grace. From there, head north through a series of narrow walkways and parapets. Numerous enemies patrol the area but are often distracted or looking the wrong way, making them easy targets for backstabs. Each enemy here drops between 2,000 and 3,000 Runes, and some even self-destruct for bonus gains. You can easily earn 40,000 Runes or more per run.

Maximizing Your Rune Gains

There are several ways to enhance your Rune acquisition beyond choosing the right location:

Equip the Golden Scarab

This talisman increases the number of Runes earned from all enemies while equipped. It’s one of the most useful accessories for farming and progression. It requires defeating a pair of Cleanrot Knights in the Abandoned Cave, but the payoff is well worth the effort.

Collect Golden Rune Items

Keep an eye out for white-glowing skulls scattered across the environment. These contain Golden Rune items which can be used from your inventory for an instant Rune payout. They range from small boosts to massive windfalls depending on the item tier.

Watch for Gold Leaf Weather

Occasionally, you’ll see shimmering gold leaves falling like snow at night. This weather effect slightly boosts all Rune gains while active. If you’re farming during one of these rare occurrences, take full advantage of the increased payout.

Use Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot

This consumable increases Rune income for a short duration. It’s best saved for boss fights or high-yield farming sessions. Keep a few on hand to pop before big encounters or dense enemy areas.

Exploit Faction Fights

In various parts of the game, enemies will fight each other. These moments can be used to passively farm Runes by staying back and letting them handle each other. Then clean up what’s left for easy gains.

Summon to Help With Bosses

If you’re overleveled or looking for a quick Rune fix, place your summon sign at boss doors. Helping others defeat bosses grants you a chunk of Runes, and it’s a great way to accumulate resources while assisting the community.

Prioritize Enemies With Glowing Eyes

These golden-eyed enemies drop extra Runes compared to their normal versions. They’re not stronger, just luckier—so always take them out first when you spot them.

Final Thoughts

Rune farming in Elden Ring is part of the journey. Whether you’re prepping for a tough boss, unlocking new spells, or pushing toward soft caps, having a steady Rune flow can make all the difference. Mohgwyn’s Palace remains the king of efficiency, but other spots throughout the game can offer great returns at different stages.

Use the tools you have, plan your routes, and boost your income with the right gear. With patience and preparation, you’ll be swimming in Runes—and ready for anything Elden Ring throws at you.
